lonely cone.

Inspired by Bodie Island Lighthouse, North Carolina.

From ages 4-12 I lived in what was then a small town in North Carolina called Cary. My elementary school followed what was called a “track system” meaning that there was no summer break. Instead, after 9 weeks of school we had a 3 week vacation. Throughout these 3 weeks, my family and I would always end up somewhere along the slim eastern coastline of North Carolina, the Outer Banks.

This is where my childhood memories start to arise. The entire coastline is an immensely alluring and picturesque region that I grew to love. These weren’t your typical vibrant world-renowned beaches that you would find along the shores of places like California or Hawaii.

They felt different. They felt dull and somber, but that’s what I loved most about it. Everything and everyone seemed lonely yet content.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse was just one of the many pieces of architecture that made it all feel complete. Made completely out of simple brick and granite, the lighthouse sits within a marshland right on the Outer Banks. There’s something about it that makes it inexplicable to me, maybe it has something to do with its blatant naivety.
